The NSW Swifts are pleased to announce Australian Diamonds shooter Caitlin Thwaites will join the Club for the 2014 ANZ Championship season, along with returning NSW Swifts defenders April Letton and Sonia Mkoloma.
The experienced trio will join six NSW Swifts already announced for next season, including 2013 teammates Carla Dziwoki, Kimberlee Green, Paige Hadley and Susan Pratley, along with Australian 21/U shooter Gretel Tippet and Australian Diamonds defender Sharni Layton.
NSW Swifts Head Coach Rob Wright said the inclusion of Letton, Mkoloma and Thwaites added an element of flexibility and excitement to the 2014 roster.
“It’s fantastic that April, Sonia and Caitlin will be a part of the NSW Swifts for next season. These latest signings give us experience across the court, as well as strengthen our player roster, not just for 2014 but for the coming years” Wright said.
“We will now be able to mix up our attacking and defensive options to change our playing style to keep ahead of the game, which is incredibly exciting.”
Wright said the signing of another international shooter was a real coup for the Club.
“Caitlin’s record speaks for itself. She is a high quality shooter who shoots big numbers, as seen this season with the Central Pulse, making her a smart addition to our front line,” Wright said.
At 26 years old, Thwaites has already amassed 79 ANZ Championship Caps and scored over 2000 ANZ Championship goals during her spells with the Melbourne Vixens (2008-10) and Central Pulse (2011-13), and was announced on the weekend in the extended Australian Diamonds team to contest the International Netball Series, starting next month.
A product of the Netball NSW Player Development Pathway, April Letton has made the successful transition from underage NSW representative to ANZ Championships, and will continue to represent her home State in 2014, a third consecutive ANZ Championship season with the Swifts.
Since joining the Club in 2012, the 23 year old has notched up 19 ANZ Championship caps and has represented Australia ( FastNet 2010-2011; Fast5 2012) making her debut for the Australian Diamonds against England in January this year.
The 2013 NSW Swifts Players’ Player of the Year and fan favourite Sonia Mkoloma will call Sydney home for her fifth consecutive season.
The 34 year old English import brings a wealth of experience to the defensive end with 111 international caps and 81 ANZ Championship games to her name, including 55 consecutive matches for the NSW Swifts (2010-2013).
Further announcements on the remaining positions in the 2014 NSW Swifts playing roster will be made in due course.
