The NSW Swifts are delighted to confirm the signing of current England Netball Team Captain Jade Clarke, along with defender Micaela Wilson and shooter Erin Hoare for 2015.
Clarke, 30, joins the NSW Swifts as the Club’s Import Player following two seasons with Christchurch-based ANZ Championship franchise, Mainland Tactix, having previously played for the Northern Mystics (2012), and Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic as a replacement player in 2010.
Having made her England debut in 2003 against the New Zealand Silver Ferns, Clarke has made to-date 98 appearances for her country; competing at three Netball World Championships (2003, 2007 and 2011), two Netball World Series (2009 and 2011), and next week will lead the England Netball Team at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow – her third Games having won Bronze medals at both 2006 (Melbourne) and 2010 (Delhi).
On the eve of her team’s Commonwealth Games Training Camp in Bath (England), Clarke said she was thrilled to be running out for the Swifts next season.
“I’m delighted to be joining the NSW Swifts next season, they are a great Club and have an exciting roster,” Jade Clarke said.
“I’ve had some great battles with Kim Green over the years, so it will be really nice to be on the same team and develop combinations with this group of players.
“The crowds the Swifts play in front of are just awesome and to experience that next year will be something very special.”
“The Swifts made the Finals this year, but are focused on taking that next step in 2015, and I’m very much looking forward to playing my part in their success,” concluded Clarke.
Circle defender Micaela Wilson, 21, has been recruited by the Swifts after impressing the coaching staff during her two games with the Club as a replacement player last season; Round Three vs Adelaide Thunderbirds and Round Seven vs Melbourne Vixens. At 188cms, the former Melbourne Vixen (2011 and 2012) will provide great cover for the Swifts’ Australian Defensive pairing of Sharni Layton and Julie Corletto.
At 194cms, shooter Erin Hoare becomes the tallest player of the ten athletes confirmed by the NSW Swifts for season 2015. Currently playing for Victorian Fury in the Australian Netball League following two seasons with the Vixens (2013 and 2014), the 25-year-old will provide added depth to the experienced shooting line of Susan Pratley and Caitlin Thwaites.
NSW Swifts Head Coach Rob Wright said Clarke’s signing is massive news for the Club, and along with the nine other signings thus far, is a further reflection of the Swifts’ Premiership aspirations.
“Jade is not only a world-class netballer but a natural leader, who will fit perfectly into our roster and the style of netball we want to play,” said Rob Wright.
“I’m really excited about the depth and talent we now have in our midcourt for next season, with Jade complementing Kim (Green), Paige (Hadley) and Abbey (McCulloch).
“Micaela and Erin offer our roster something different at either end of the court. Both are tall, yet versatile, and will further strengthen our options for next season.
“When I was appointed as Head Coach, I wanted to deliver success to the NSW Swifts, and I believe we are assembling a roster which is capable of claiming that elusive second Premiership,” concluded Wright.
