Two days of fantastic netball were had at Fairfield City Netball Association on Wednesday and Thursday, 5-6 October, as the 2016 Oceania Cup took centre stage of the Netball NSW roadshow.
The tournament was aided by glorious weather as athletes, coaches, supporters, umpires, bench officials and staff all came together to produce another fine tournament, in what’s already been an amazing year for netball across New South Wales.
In a chilled atmosphere with music and dance throughout, Fairfield City provided and excellent backdrop as players in two categories – 13U and 15U – took to the courts to produce some fine netball.
Netball NSW would like to congratulate The Corals-Yellow, who won the 13U title ahead of runners up the Cha Cha’s. The organisation would also like to congratulate the 15U winners Afatasi Styles – who were undefeated – and runners up Central Coast All Stars.
Sixteen teams participated in this year’s event, which was the fifth time the carnival has been run. Participants were also treated to a Netfit training session with GIANTS Netball – and former NSW Swifts – player Taylah Davies on the Wednesday.
Netball NSW Board Member Carol Murphy said it was great seeing so many young people join in the fun in 2016.
“This tournament started a few years ago with the focus on fun and enjoyment, not quite as formal as other events, and it’s wonderful seeing so many people dressed up in their grass skirts and having a wonderful time,” Murphy said.
“There has been a carnival atmosphere here at Fairfield for the past two days, everyone has enjoyed themselves and we look forward to this competition getting bigger and better next year.
“I would like to thank our partners The Athlete’s Foot for their support in bringing this event to life in 2016 and also the fantastic umpires, coaches, bench officials, volunteers and Netball NSW staff who do amazing work.
“They are every bit as important as the players on the courts and their services are invaluable to our sport.”
