History up for grabs in U20s decider

The Panthers have the opportunity to create history tonight when they take to the Show Court at Genea Netball Centre to defend their Samsung Premier League Under 20s title; however, they must overcome a strong opposition in the UTS St George Sparks.

The Under 20s division will open Samsung Premier League Grand Final week tonight at 7:30pm, in what is an exciting re-match of the Major Semi Final. The Panthers may have emerged victors then, but they come up against a spirited Sparks unit who fought back hard in the second half – outscoring their opponents 26-20 to produce a thrilling performance.

Putting aside their recent previous meeting, tonight’s title decider will pit the best attacking team against the best defensive team; a recipe for what is sure to be an exciting match-up.

The Panthers produced the best attacking statistics across both divisions, having scored 812 goals during the regular season; this works out to be an average of 58 goals per game, almost a goal a minute!

However, the Sparks have proven they have the defensive power to nullify the Panthers’ scoreboard influence.

The UTS franchise boasts the best defensive numbers for the competition, with their Opens side allowing an average of 45 goals per game while their Under 20s allow an average of 45.7 goals per game. In fact, when you compare the Spark’s U20s defensive stats to that of the Opens division, they have better numbers than any of them (the nearest are Sutherland Stingrays with 47.9 goals).

The Sparks have also proven they have the tools to defeat the Minor Premiers, having claimed victories in both their regular season match-ups – first in Round 4 by six goals, and then again in Round 11 by double digits.

But the Panthers have proven Finals success by not only claiming the Major Semi Final to earn a week off, but by coming from third place in 2016 to finish inaugural Champions.

While we don’t have a crystal ball to predict the winner, what we CAN guarantee is that the best place to watch tonight’s Under 20s Grand Final is courtside at Genea Netball Centre!
