Netball NSW’s newest competition for our younger generation of netballers, Schools Cup, continues to be contested throughout the State.
On Wednesday 17 July, Charlestown held their Schools Cup Local Day at Charlestown Netball Association where 17 teams participated in a tight competition, with two sides going through to the Regional Final on Wednesday 7 August.
Congratulations to Jewells Primary School and Marks Point Primary School who finished on equal points and will advance the Regional Final in Maitland to contest against the best schools from around the Hunter region.
Netball NSW Regional Coordinator – Hunter Monique Smith says there was a large crowd enjoying great display of netball in sunny conditions, including one special guest.
“NSW Swifts defender April Letton came down to Charlestown to help support and present MVP awards to nominated players from each team,” Smith said.
“April was fantastic – was really friendly with everyone, took lots of photos and everyone got a real buzz about her presence.”
“Another highlight was the combined efforts from Hinton and Iona Primary Schools, who had students from each school form a joint team to ensure their students could participate in the competition. It was fantastic to see and showed the true character of what Schools Cup is all about,” Smith concluded.
The Netball NSW Schools Cup is a new initiative by Netball NSW to provide New South Wales primary school students in Years Five and Six with the opportunity to enjoy netball in a fun and safe environment.
School teams will compete in round robin carnivals in their local area called “Schools Cup Local Days” from March to August, with overall winners from each “Local Day” progressing to a Schools Cup “Regional Final”.
Victorious teams from Regional Finals will advance to the Netball NSW Schools Cup State Final, to be held at Anne Clark Centre, Lidcombe on Wednesday 18 September, 2013.
