Following on from Charlestown hosting their Local Day on Wednesday, the West/Central West Region held their Regional Day at Orange PCYC yesterday, Thursday 18 July.
Seven primary schools from across the region converged after being crowned the winners of their Schools Cup Local Day, all contesting to represent the West/Central West region at the Schools Cup Final in Sydney later in the year.
Congratulations to St Mary’s Orange for taking home the inaugural Schools Cup Shield – West/Central West, and for qualifying to represent the region on Wednesday 18 September where they will hope to be crowned the overall winners.
The home side had great support on the day, with their St Mary’s classmates coming down to PCYC to cheer on the team in the decider against Dunedoo Central.
St Mary’s coach Janet Millar said the team was very excited to advance through to the State Final later this year.
“The girls were really proud to represent St Mary’s. Once we had won our Local Day, we had the goal to do well at the Regional Final. To do that undefeated is fantastic and now we just look forward to the opportunity to go to Sydney to contest the State Final,” Millar said.
Millar said the team were given brand new netball dresses especially for Schools Cup, which made the girls feel even more special heading into the competition.
“The boys have uniforms for Rugby League, Union and soccer. This was a small gesture to the girls and nice to focus on them and their achievements.”
The Netball NSW Schools Cup is a new initiative by Netball NSW to provide New South Wales primary school students in Years Five and Six with the opportunity to enjoy netball in a fun and safe environment.
School teams will compete in round robin carnivals in their local area called “Schools Cup Local Days” from March to August, with overall winners from each “Local Day” progressing to a Schools Cup “Regional Final”.
Victorious teams from Regional Finals will advance to the Netball NSW Schools Cup State Final, to be held at Anne Clark Centre, Lidcombe on Wednesday 18 September, 2013.
Congratulations St Mary’s Orange and best of luck for the Schools Cup State Final later this year!
