Tight contest to decide North Coast Champion

The round robin stage of the 2014 North Coast Regional State League competition has wound up, with the Finals to be contested on Sunday 25 May at Hastings Valley Netball Association – and what a contest netball fans are in for!

Coffs Harbour Opens, Taree Opens and two teams from Hastings Valleys (35s and 17s) are all in the race to be crowned Division One Champions, however in a remarkable turn of events all four teams finished the round robin stage with the exact same win/loss ratio!

Finishing with 21 points each, the four sides were separated by just under five percent goal differential, setting up a thrilling Finals weekend.

Netball NSW Regional Coordinator – North Coast Rachelle Finlayson said it was amazing that all four teams could finish with 10 wins, one draw and three losses, proving it difficult to pick a winner from the pack.

“What a way to finish the season – four teams on exactly the same points, all with the exact same win/loss ratio; no one could have planned it better!” Finlayson said.

“It’s certainly added an extra element to our Finals weekend with the competition so tight.  The community is excited and hopefully we see a great crowd in Hastings Valley to cheer on the teams.”

With only four teams contesting Division Two this season, only a Grand Final will be contested on Finals Day, with top two sides Nambucca Valley 17s and Coffs Harbour 17s vying for the title at 12pm.

Nambucca Valley 17s finished the regular season undefeated on top of the ladder, leading Coffs Harbour 17s, Great Lakes 17s and Macleay 17s after six rounds of competition.

It wasn’t just the players that were reaping the benefits of a tight competition, with three North Coast umpires receiving their National C Badges during Day Two play at Coffs Harbour Netball Association.

Congratulations to Coffs Harbour pair Brittney Mulhearne (14) and Caitlyn Stuart (15) and 12-year-old Piper Thompson from Hastings Valley who were all assessed by Netball NSW mentor Kate Thornborough to achieve their C Badges.  The trio will now be invited to join other umpires who received their C Badges during 2014 to this year’s Rookie Camp in November.
