The GrainCorp Regional State League – Riverina competition has finished with Wagga Wagga 17s being crowned the 2013 Champions after defeating Young Opens, 48-30, in the Grand Final contested on Sunday 14 April.
The finals were played at Junee Junction Recreation and Aquatic Centre in Wagga Wagga, with the home-town champions defeating Young Opens in the first Semi Final (46-23) to progress straight to the Grand Final later in the afternoon.
However Young Opens were given another chance when they took on Griffith 17s in the Preliminary Final. It was a tight tussle with Young gaining an early advantage before a resurgence from Griffith in the second quarter. At one stage Griffith came within five goals, but Young Opens held onto the lead to post a nine goal victory and a rematch against Wagga Wagga 17s for the title.
Top of the table leaders Wagga Wagga 17s showed their dominance in the Grand Final, leading at every break. While Young Opens contested hard in the second quarter, Wagga Wagga – cheered on by their home crowd – put their foot down in the third, outscoring their opponents 18 goals to seven.
In the end the goal difference was too much for Young Opens to chase down, with home town Wagga Wagga 17s claiming 2013 honours.
Head Coach Rosemary Clarke said she was thrilled the team were able to claim the title after facing adversity early in the season.
“I’m very proud of our team for winning the title, especially since our preparations were interrupted with injuries … however our younger players really stepped up to take on more responsibility and their hard work has paid off,” Clarke said.
“GrainCorp State League – Riverina is a perfect competition for us to trial our combinations across the court with so many versatile players, and now we turn our attention to solidifying those combinations as we prepare for State Championships in June.”
After finishing GrainCorp State League – Riverina Division One winners, Wagga Wagga 17s will be invited to compete in the Inter Region State League Competition played on the Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 September at the Anne Clark Centre.
