Netball NSW yesterday, Thursday 12 November, held its inaugural ANZ NetSetGO! School Gala Day for Students with Disabilities at the Anne Clark Centre, an event proudly supported by the NSW State Government.
The event is a new initiative by Netball NSW to provide school-aged students with disabilities who currently participate in the ANZ NetSetGO! program the opportunity to play netball against other students of similar ability, or participate and learn new skills and activities.
Yesterday saw students from 10 primary and high schools – as far as Nowra and Gosford – descend on the Anne Clark Centre, allowing participants to put into action their new skills, getting involved in match play, and most importantly have fun!
The School Gala Day was also designed as a professional development opportunity for teachers and support staff by being able to gain skills and knowledge on how to run the ANZ NetSetGO! program in their community.
Netball NSW Community Engagement Manager Kristy Guthrie said it was wonderful to be able to host the schools and see the students build confidence in their abilities.
“I’m really happy with response to our inaugural ANZ NetSetGO! School Gala Day and want to thank everyone for coming. We had schools from far and wide come enjoy the day, and the students really responded well and had a lot of fun,” Guthrie said.
“The main objective for the Gala Day was to provide students with a disability the opportunity to try out their new netball skills and build their confidence in an inclusive sporting environment. It was terrific to see them engaging in all the activities with big smiles on their faces.”
“I would like to say a big thank you to the NSW State Government for their support, the Netball NSW staff and Development Officers who helped out, and also to the teachers and support staff for their assistance. It was a great day and hopefully the students can continue to participate in netball and grow their skills,” Guthrie concluded.
At the end of the day each student was presented with a participation certificate to take home.
