Excitement is building as schools from across the State make their way to the Sydney to contest the 2014 Netball NSW Schools Cup State Final next Tuesday 16 September at the Anne Clark Centre, Lidcombe.
Schools Cup is an initiative by Netball NSW to provide New South Wales primary and secondary school students in Years Five, Six, Seven and Eight with the opportunity to enjoy netball in a fun and safe environment.
School teams competed in round robin “Local Day” carnivals earlier in the year, with the overall winners from each Local Day progressing to a “Regional Final” where 20 State Finalists were revealed to represent their community at the State Final.
The Finalists will contest in three age-divisions – Years 5/6 Mixed, Years 7/8 Girls and Years 7/8 Boys – all vying to take home the 2014 State Champions trophy in their respective division.
After its inaugural competition last year, two new divisions were included in 2014 with the introduction of the Years 7/8 Girls and Boys divisions.
This year has seen 30 Local Days and eight Regional Finals held across the State, with nearly 5,500 players taking the court for 548 teams representing 319 primary and secondary schools.
Netball NSW General Manager – Sport Development Nikki Horton could not have been happier with the progression of the State-wide competition, after Casino West were crowned the 2013 State Champions.
“We’ve seen a huge response to this year’s competition with more than double the number of children participating in 2014 compared to last year, which is really pleasing and a credit to everyone involved,” Horton said.
“Netball NSW recognised an opportunity to engage public and primary schools from around the State, as well as give our younger netballers a chance to compete against one another – something they previously didn’t have access to.”
“To see how well this competition has been received by schools across NSW after only two years is a great reflection on the popularity of netball at a grassroots level.”
“Good luck to all the participating schools at our 2014 Schools Cup State Final; I’m looking forward to a great atmosphere with visitors from all over the State coming together for a fun day of netball,” Horton concluded.
The 2014 Netball NSW Schools Cup is proudly supported by our Official Charity Partner The Kids’ Cancer Project.
