Netball NSW in conjunction with Active After School Care (AASC) recently held a Gala Day, on Thursday 22 May, at Bankstown City Netball Association (BCNA).
Local schools St Charbel’s College and Holy Saviour Primary School have been participating in netball as part of their AASC program, and were invited to come together and try out their new skills.
Over 100 students attended the Gala Day, ranging from Kindergarten through to Year 7 students, participating in a range of different skills and training drills, with the day finishing with some match play.
Netball NSW Development Officers delivered the Gala Day, with the assistance of Club coaches from BCNA, with the Association also putting on a BBQ for students, parents and teachers – a big thank you to Bankstown City for their support!
Netball NSW Community Engagement Manager Kristy Guthrie said the Gala Day was another stepping stone in helping to spread the netball love throughout communities.
“The aim of the Gala Day was to provide Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CaLD) participants with the opportunity to develop their netball skills, physical fitness, social skills, sportsmanship and understanding of netball in a fun, safe and inclusive environment,” Guthrie said.
“We also wanted to provide participants with the opportunity to meet their local Association, hopefully encouraging them to sign up with their local Club and continue to play netball outside of the AASC program.
“BCNA have been amazing in their continued support and are really passionate about engaging people from all backgrounds in our sport. Also thanks to Netball Australia who provided financial support, as well as the partnership support of AASC.
“At the end of the day it was great to see students participating in netball skills and match play, but most importantly just having fun. The smiles on the kids’ faces at the completion of the event made it all worth it. The feedback was positive and there were a lot of students interested in taking their netball further which is awesome,” Guthrie said.
