Gosford ready to host 50th State Championships

The Central Coast will be a hive activity this weekend with Gosford Netball Association hosting the 2018 Netball NSW State Championships.

One of the biggest female sporting events in Australia, 2018 is a special year with it marking the 50th running of the iconic Championships since they were first held in 1969 at Sydney’s Moore Park.

Back then 24 affiliated Associations entered in two age divisions – Opens and Cadets – with Manly Warringah taking home both titles.

Fifty years on and Gosford Netball Association will welcome 96 teams from 71 Associations from Saturday to Monday, 9-11 June, for three days of top class action.

The teams will compete across five divisions – Open Championship, Open Division Two, 17/U Championship, 17/U Division Two, 17/U Division 3 – with the winners of the Opens and 17/U Championship Divisions crowned State Champions of their respective age groups for 2018.

Not only are both those titles at stake, but the Pat Weston OAM Country Championship Trophy is also up for grabs by the highest ranked regional team in the Open Championship Division (article continues below).

“It is with great pride that everyone in the NSW netball family looks back over the past 50 years,” Louise Sullivan, President of Netball NSW, says.

“From humble beginnings, the State Championships – alongside the State Age Championships – have become iconic events on the NSW sporting calendar.

“Having reached our 50th year, I believe now is a fitting time to reflect on what has been achieved and look ahead to what we hope will be another half century of growth and prosperity for our game in NSW.”

Sullivan also paid tribute to Gosford Netball Association for their efforts helping to stage this year’s State Championships.

“Thousands of visitors will gather in Gosford for a fantastic three days of netball, and I would like to thank our hosts for all their efforts in working alongside Netball NSW to deliver this event,” she said.

“It is fantastic to be taking these Championships to the Central Coast, a region that has produced many fine netballers.

“Many will come from near and far and I really hope the State Championships are everything they hoped they would be. I am sure they will.”

Netball NSW would like to thank the following Major Partners for their support of the 2018 State Championships: The Australian College of Physical Education, BBX, TAFE NSW, Bioglan and QBE Insurance.
