The race for Finals places at the 2018 National Netball Championships in Adelaide reached the business end on Day 4 of competition on Friday, 20 April.
The NSW 17/U Team, who started off the day a place outside the top four in fifth, got things underway in fine fashion, putting in a good first-half performance against Northern Territory to lead 24-13 at the big break.
And they kept their efforts up in the second half, hammering home their advantage to run out 53-28 winners.
In their second game of the day, against hosts South Australia, the NSW team showed grit, determination and huge spirit against the competition pace-setters, living with them goal for goal for the entire contest.
But in heartbreaking fashion the team just missed out on the win by a single goal 40-39 in what was the game of the championships so far.
The result means NSW miss out on a place in the Finals on goal percentage, with Western Australia pipping them on that count. South Australia, Victoria and Queensland make up the top three in that order.
There was better news for NSW 19/U team on the Finals front, despite them starting the day with a loss.
Second on the ladder at the start of the day and well in title contention, they ran into an inspired Queensland in their first contest, going down by six goals – 28-22.
The 19s were only down by margins of two at both half and three-quarter time, however, a really strong last period from the Queenslanders saw them home, leaving NSW with a must-win game against Northern Territory later in the day.
Luckily, the NSW side had little problems seeing off Northern Territory, racking up the goals to register a 45-16 win and secure third place on the ladder and the opportunity to contest Finals this weekend.
Finishing fourth on the ladder the now face the unbeaten Victorians in the Finals tomorrow.
