The Netball NSW Waratahs team which will contest the 2018 Australian Netball League has been confirmed.
Fourteen athletes have been selected for the tournament which is Netball Australia’s feeder competition into Suncorp Super Netball, providing a pathway for the development and identification of national athletes.
Each ANL team is aligned to a Super Netball team with the Waratahs, as per previous seasons, once again linked to the NSW Swifts in 2018. All four NSW Swifts Training Partners for 2018 have been included in the NNSW Waratahs squad.
Head Coach Colleen Mitchell said she was excited by the talent in the young group of players selected and looked forward to seeing them develop over the course of the season.
“The ANL is a very high-level competition with plenty of opportunities for growth, development and exposure to some of the best players in the game and our athletes will benefit hugely from it,” she said.
“NSW also has a proud history of success in this competition and this is something we are looking to add to over the course of 2018.
“While we have a lot of youth in this team there are some players who were in the Waratahs last year too, therefore we will be looking to them for on-court leadership.
“The link with the NSW Swifts is also a huge motivation for the players selected. The Swifts have long been one of Australia’s premier sporting franchises and to have a bond with them is huge boost to the Waratahs starting to chase their dreams.”
Margaret Hamley, State Pathways Manager at Netball NSW, said the organisation was impressed by the attitude displayed by all athletes throughout the selection process.
“The Waratahs selected are there because our coaching team was excited by their netball talent, skill and determination on court,” Hamley said.
“The final decision certainly was not an easy one and the coaches emphasised the belief they have in everyone who trialled for the team.
“The players selected should now enjoy their Christmas break we look forward to them returning refreshed and ready to go in what promises to be a huge 2018.
“We can’t wait to see them in ANL action.”
The Waratahs get their 2018 ANL season underway on the road in Melbourne against VIC Fury on Saturday 5 May. For their full 2018 ANL Fixture CLICK HERE.
