The Netball NSW Waratahs put up a strong contest during the 2013 Australian Netball League Grand Final last Sunday 25 August, pushing eventual champions Victorian Fury to the final minutes to go down, 56-51.

The two sides first met at the very beginning of the season, opening the 2013 competition in Week 1 at the Anne Clark Centre.  The Victorians took honours in that match as well, posting a comfortable 24 goal victory, further demonstrating the improvement the NNSW Waratahs achieved throughout the eight week competition.

Although disappointed to finish Runners-Up for the second year in a row, Assistant Coach Maria Lynch said she couldn’t be prouder of the team’s efforts throughout the 2013 competition.

“The girls were magnificent out there. We played [the Fury] in the very first round … we took a lot of lessons from that and we grew as a unit; today is just testament to what they’ve put out over the last couple of weeks in preparation for this big showdown.,” Lynch said.

At the conclusion of the Grand Final, Victorian Fury shooter Mwai Kumwenda was awarded the 2013 ANL Player of the Year for her breakout debut season.

The Malawi Queens representative shot a record breaking total of 461 goals at 95 per cent accuracy, eclipsing teammate Simone Nalder’s 2010 record of 370 goals at 84 per cent while playing with the Australian Institute of Sport.

NSW netball fans can see Kumwenda live in action when she takes the court against the Australian Diamonds during the International Netball Series, when the two sides visit Wollongong on Wednesday 16 October at WIN Entertainment Centre.

This game will also be a great opportunity for NSW netball supporters to see 2014 NSW Swifts and Diamonds representatives Kim Green, Paige Hadley, Sharni Layton and Caitlin Thwaites on court together ahead of the new ANZ Championship season.
