The Canberra GIANTS have this morning confirmed their 14-player squad ahead of the 2018 Australian Netball League.
Overseen by co-Head Coaches Sharyn Hill and Maria Lynch, the extended 14-player squad is a balanced mixture of new faces and veteran heads, including all four GIANTS Netball Training Partners: Taylah Davies, Georgia Marshall, Teigan O’Shannassy and Amy Parmenter.
They will be joined by Toni Anderson, Beryl Friday, Ngawai Eyles and Maddie Hay who have all experienced netball at its top level – Anderson as part of the inaugural GIANTS Netball team, Friday as a Premiership player with the QLD Firebirds, Eyles across the ditch with New Zealand sides Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic and Southern Steel, and Hay with the NSW Swifts.
They will bring a wealth of knowledge alongside fellow returning athletes and long-time ACT representatives Georgia Clayden and Keely Rodrigo, as well as NSW defenders Stephanie MacGougan and Kara Styles. Selected to make their ANL debuts are shooter Angelina Frketic and defender Nalani Makunde.
The ACT players will train in Canberra throughout the week alongside the Canberra GIANTS Development Squad before joining their NSW teammates for training sessions in Sydney on a regular basis in the lead up to and during the ANL season.
After finishing third in their inaugural year, Lynch says today’s squad announcement marks the first step in their goal to go one better in 2018.
“We set a strong foundation in our first year together, and I’m thrilled with the team we have assembled who can build on that next season,” Lynch said.
“I’m really proud of what we were able to achieve in our first season, however I know there’s room for improvement. The standard of ANL is a huge step up for athletes in terms of intensity at both training and competition, and that will be no different in 2018.
“We are under no illusions that we can rest of what we did this year – we need to build and get better, and I believe this team can do that. We have some great athletes with lots of experience, but what is really exciting is the versatility amongst the group; that will prove to be a vital component as we head into competition.
“The ANL provides such a great platform for athletes to test themselves on the national stage and showcase their talents in front of Suncorp Super Netball coaches. It’s a privilege to work alongside them, Sharyn and our support staff, and I’m excited to get our 2018 campaign underway.”
About the Australian Netball League
Founded in 2008 with the introduction of the former Trans-Tasman Netball League, the Australian Netball League (ANL) gives netball fans around the country the chance to see some of the country’s best young talent in action.
For the players, coaches and officials, it is a fantastic opportunity to test their skills in a competition that bridges the gap between State League competitions and Suncorp Super Netball (SSN).
In 2017, Netball Australia made the decision to align each ANL team with a SSN Franchise to provide greater lineage to the elite stage:
|ANL Team||Suncorp Super Netball Franchise|
|Canberra GIANTS||GIANTS Netball|
|Netball NSW Waratahs||NSW Swifts|
|QLD Fusion||QLD Firebirds|
|Southern Force||Adelaide Thunderbirds|
|Tassie Magpies||Collingwood Magpies Netball Club|
|Territory Storm||Sunshine Coast Lightning|
|Victorian Fury||Melbourne Vixens|
|Western Sting||West Coast Fever|
Netball Australia are yet to confirm the 2018 ANL Fixtures. More information regarding dates and tickets will be available in due course.
