Netball NSW is pleased to announce midcourter Emily Keenan will captain the Netball NSW (NNSW) Waratahs for the 2014 Australian Netball League (ANL) season.
Keenan will be supported by shooter Leah Shoard and defender Elly Willan in the Leadership Group, providing a leader in each third of the court.
Upon making the announcement, NNSW Waratahs Head Coach Anita Keelan said the 32-year-old was an obvious choice to lead the side.
“Emily is an experienced athlete, particularly at ANL level. She is highly regarded amongst her peers, has a quiet composure about her, and is vocal in her positivity; she already has the makings of being a terrific Captain,” Keelan said.
“All three players display the type of qualities we are looking for from a Leadership Group – they deliver on court, have a professional attitude, and their work ethic and commitment to the program is first class.”
NetballNSWTV caught up with the new Captain to ask what it meant to lead the NNSW Waratahs this season.
“It’s really exciting … it was such a lovely surprise to get voted as Captain and I’m really excited for the season ahead,” Keenan said.
“It means a huge amount to represent New South Wales – growing up that was always the pinnacle, to represent your State and represent it with pride. It’s all about heart for me … and I’m really excited to be able to do that [again].”
After beginning her ANL career with the Netball NSW Blues in 2010, Keenan played another season with the outfit before graduating to the NNSW Waratahs in 2012, a year after the team claimed their first ANL crown. Since then, Keenan and the NNSW Waratahs have finished Runners-Up in consecutive seasons and are eager to go one step further this year.
“[The] title is absolutely what we’ll be striving for. We’ve come so close for the past two years and to take it out would be just so rewarding for all the hard work we’ve put in.” Keenan said.
“I think we’ve got a great team this year, a new team [with] some fresh faces and a great mix of youth and experience, so I think we’ve got the team to do it.”
