Netball NSW is pleased to confirm Kristen Kessler will captain the NSW 17/U Team at the 2015 National Netball Championships, to be contested next week at Netball Central from April 14-19.
Kessler is one of three returning athletes from the 2014 17/U State Team, and will be assisted by defender Lauren Moore and shooter Laura Towell as co-Vice Captains during the week-long tournament.
Hailing from Wyong District Netball Association, Kessler made her Nationals debut last year where she assisted the NSW 17/U Team to finish Runners-Up to hosts, Victoria. The 16-year-old midcourter had an impressive first-time Nationals tournament, which saw her selected in the 2014 Australian 17/U Squad alongside her 2015 teammates Moore and Kirra Jones.
NSW 17/U Head Coach Moira Gaha said the coaches took a holistic approach to determining the 2015 Leadership Team, and said she wasn’t surprised that Kessler’s peers had mimicked the coaches’ choice in Captain.
“We gave the girls an opportunity to vote – to have their say on who they thought was good to lead them, and it worked out [between the coaches] votes and [the players] votes,” Gaha explained.
“We gave the girls opportunity to actually demonstrate leadership skills and all of them in their own way have really led the way… but Kristen, I think, is that person that sets the mark on everything.
NetballNSWTV caught up with Kessler following the announcement, where the 16-year-old said she was extremely honoured to be named Captain.
“I was quite shocked [when Moira told me the news], but really flattered for the opportunity to lead the girls out at this year’s Nationals,” Kessler said.
Kessler hopes that her previous experience will help some of her more inexperienced teammates, with nine athletes set to make their Nationals debuts in 2015.
“The overall intensity of the games [is quite different] and preparation is very key to our success, so the better we prepare the better we will be out on the court.”
