Netball NSW have today announced the coaching staff that will guide the New South Wales State Teams and Netball NSW Australian National League (ANL) Teams in 2014.
Former AIS Assistant Coach, Australian 21/U Assistant Coach and current NSW Swifts’ Technical Assistant Coach, Anita Keelan will take charge of ANL Team the Netball NSW Waratahs. While former Australian Diamond and Specialist Coach at the Northern Mystics, now current member of the 2014 NSW Swifts’ coaching team, Megan Anderson will be Head Coach of the Netball NSW Blues.
Former International Coach and 2014 NSW Swifts’ Contracted Midcourt Specialist Coach, Megan Simpson returns to the State coaching fold in 2014 as Head Coach of the NSW 21/U. Simpson has extensive State coaching experience, having been the NSW 19/U Head Coach (2012), NSW 19/U Assistant Coach (2007, 2011), and NSW 17/U Head Coach (2008).
Experienced coaches, Briony Akle and Moira Gaha have been appointed Head Coaches of the NSW 19/U and NSW 17/U Teams respectively. Akle returns to the State Team set-up having been Assistant Coach of the 2012 NSW 21/U Team, Head Coach of 2011 NSW 17/U Team, and was Head Coach of Baulkham Hills during the 2013 DOOLEYS State League Waratah Cup (Division One).
Gaha was Head Coach of St George during the 2013 DOOLEYS State League Waratah Cup (Division One), Head Coach of the 2013 NNSW Blues, Assistant Coach of 2011 & 2012 NNSW Blues and Assistant Coach of 2011 NSW 17/U Team.
In addition to their State Team duties, Akle and Gaha will also have the opportunity to take their learnings as NSW Swifts’ Apprentice Coaches into the 2014 ANL season as Assistant Coaches for NNSW Blues and NNSW Waratahs respectively.
New Advanced level Coach, Amber Cross receives her first State appointment as the NSW 17/U Assistant Coach. Cross also coached the successful NSW Team at the recent Sports Institutes and Sports Academies (SIS/SAS) Challenge in Canberra.
2013 NSW 17/U Assistant Coach Colleen Mitchell will step up to the 19/U Assistant Coach role. Mitchell has also been the Head Coach of Penrith in the DOOLEYS State League Waratah Cup (Division One) for the last 4 years. Netball NSW is yet to appoint an Assistant Coach for the 21/U and 17/U Development Team.
In addition to the existing NSW State Teams, Netball NSW is introducing a NSW 17/U Development Team. 2013 19/U Assistant Coach and co-coach of the reigning DOOLEYS State League Waratah Cup Champions (Eastwood Ryde), Leonie Stewart-Weeks will take up the Head Coach role for this newly created team, comprising of players who will challenge and compete for places in the Netball NSW High Performance program in future years.
On making these appointments, Netball NSW General Manager – High Performance, Tracey Fear, remarked on the depth of coaching stocks within NSW and outlined the vision for the NSW State Teams.
“We received an increased number of applicants for 2014 Coaching positions, and we are excited at the calibre and depth of coaches available for appointment,” Fear said.
“Working with all of the appointed High Performance personnel, we want to continue the great work that has resulted in NSW being consistently successful at all levels of National events.”
“We want to ensure that our State Teams not only develop emerging athletes into future NSW Swifts and Australian Diamonds, but also provide our increasing pool of coaching talent with opportunities to expand their coaching experiences and develop into exceptional coaches.”
