Netball NSW is delighted to announce it has finalised coaching appointments for three of the organisation’s teams which will participate in the 2018 Australian Netball League (ANL) and the 2018 National Netball Championships.
As per 2017, Netball NSW will field two teams in the 2018 ANL – the competition which bridges the gap between the SAMSUNG Premier League competition and Suncorp Super Netball – with the Netball NSW Waratahs and Canberra GIANTS once again taking the court.
The Waratahs, who are allied with the NSW Swifts, will be led by former State Team Coach Colleen Mitchell (Ku-ring-gai Netball Association) with ex-Swift and England international Sonia Mkoloma returning to her role as Assistant Coach in 2018.
A coaching announcement regarding the Canberra GIANTS – a joint venture between Netball NSW and Netball ACT, and allied with GIANTS Netball – will be made shortly. Fixtures for the 2018 ANL are yet to be announced by Netball Australia but further information will be released in due course.
In the State Team space, Netball NSW has also appointed both Head and Assistant Coaches for the NSW 17/U and 19/U Teams which will represent the State at the 2018 National Netball Championships in Adelaide next April.
Every year Australia’s best up and coming talent has the opportunity to represent their respective State or Territory at the Nationals and the tournament is central to both Netball NSW and Netball Australia’s High Performance pathways.
In 2018 the NSW 17/U team will be coached by former State Player and Swift Nerida Stewart (Gosford Netball Association) with another ex-State representative and Swift, Nardia Macdonald, (Northern Suburbs Netball Association) joining her in the role of Assistant Coach.
The 19/U side, meanwhile, will head to South Australia under the guidance of long-time State Team Coach Lenore Blades (Sutherland Shire Netball Association), who will be assisted by experienced State-Team coach, Amber Cross (Wyong District Netball Association).
Another NSW-bred coach, Kirstie Fuller (Gunnedah Netball Association), will join the 19/U side in the role of Apprentice Coach.
Speaking today Netball NSW’s Head of Netball, Nikki Horton, congratulated all of the appointed coaches and noted it was fantastic to have home-grown talent leading the sides for their 2018 campaigns.
“On behalf of Netball NSW I would firstly like to congratulate all of the coaches on their respective selections which have been hard-earned and done with all of the values we hold dear in our great game,” Horton said.
“All of the NSW coaches have come through our Coaching Pathways and it is really good for the game in this State to have people who know the grassroots looking after our up and coming talent.
“Both the Australian Netball League and National Netball Championships provide excellent platforms for athletes to shine on and show they have what it takes to make it at the highest level.
“But off-court support needs to be equally as talented and these competitions provide the coaches selected the opportunity to enhance their reputations and we at Netball NSW have every confidence in them.
“With Suncorp Super Netball entering its second season next year, 2018 promises to bigger and better than ever for netball but we couldn’t have that competition without the ANL and the Nationals.
“I would like to wish all of the coaches the very best as they undergo the process of selecting the players they feel can bring even more success to NSW.”
