Netball NSW is pleased to announce Kiera Austin will captain the NSW 19/U Team at next week’s 2015 National Netball Championships, to be contested at Netball Central from Tuesday 14 to Sunday 19 April.
The 17-year-old Eastwood Ryde representative will be assisted by her 2014 Australian 17/U teammate Amy Parmenter as Vice Captain during the week-long tournament, which will see NSW kick-start their Nationals campaign against traditional rivals Victoria.
Both athletes will be attending their second Nationals tournament, after making their debuts in 2014 when the competition was hosted by Netball Victoria at the Waverley Netball Centre. Whilst Parmenter was Captain of the Runners-Up 17/U State Team last year, 2015 will be Austin’s first foray in a leadership role.
Head Coach Briony Akle says despite Austin not having had a “leadership title” previously, she possesses all of the skills and attributes to confidently lead the 19/U State Team at this year’s tournament.
“Kiera has shown from early on that she will make a wonderful Captain; she leads from the front, is extremely supportive of her teammates and has a passion to excel,” Akle said.
“Both her and Amy are incredible athletes and balance each other well as a Leadership Team. Their colleagues respect them and with both heading into their second Nationals competition, I think will bring a lot from their 2014 experience.
After more than two months on the training track, the NSW 19/U Team will finally step out onto contest the 2015 Nationals court next week and Akle said the players are itching to get the competition underway.
“I’ve been really impressed by the team’s attitude during training – they’ve worked really hard, and I think everyone is just excited to finally get the competition underway,” Akle declared.
“Having the opportunity to play at home this year is a real confidence booster – the girls are excited to play in front of their family and friends, so I hope we get a big crowd along to cheer us and the NSW 17/U Team throughout the week.
“A loud crowd makes a huge difference, so hopefully we get a big NSW crowd cheering us on,” Akle concluded.
The 2015 17/U and 19/U National Netball Championships will be contested from Tuesday 14 to Sunday 19 April, showcasing the best and brightest netballing talent from around the country. Each State and Territory will be represented in both competitions, which will be played simultaneously at Netball NSW’s brand new $35 million centre of excellence, Netball Central.
The NSW 19/U Team will begin their Nationals campaign against Victoria at 9:00am on the opening day, before taking on the Australian Capital Territory later that afternoon at 5:00pm.
