NSW 17/U Team has suffered a narrow one goal loss to Western Australia in their opening match of the 17/U National Netball Championships in Darwin. After trailing at three quarter time, a determined WA came from behind in the final quarter to overrun NSW, 24-23.
There were plenty of nerves to open the low-scoring match, but NSW were the first to settle putting four unanswered goals in the final minutes of the first quarter to take an early lead. The WA midcourt put some tough defence over the ball to slow NSW to force errors and turn over the ball.
Despite some aerial heroics from NSW GK Ashley Valeni, WA was able to claw back the deficit to two goals at half time; NSW led 13-11.
WA came out strong and fast for the start of the second quarter, and after three consecutive goals, took the lead after five minutes of play. The two sides traded goals throughout the quarter, but NSW rallied and put three quick goals together to take back the lead. A goal on the buzzer to GA Braeden Quince gave NSW a slim one goal lead at the final break, 20-19.
But as like the third quarter, WA came out raring and the momentum was with the western side as they won the quarter five goals to NSW three to claim first round victory.
Head coach Lenore Blades says the team are disappointed, but there is plenty to be positive about.
“We were able to get all 12 players out on court today, which is really fantastic – everyone was able to get a taste of 2013 Nationals netball, which is what we planned for,” Blades said.
“Obviously we didn’t plan for a loss, and the team are disappointed … we won’t dwell on this game; we will look at the video, regroup, and get ready for South Australia later tonight.”
NSW are back on court to take on SA at 6.30pm (local time). Stay tuned to facebook.com/OfficialNetballNSW for quarter score updates and photos.
