NSW athletes selected in Australian underage Squads

Eleven NSW representatives have been selected in the Australian 17/U and 19/U Squads following the conclusion of the 2015 National Netball Championships at Netball NSW’s $35 million centre of excellence, Netball Central.

NSW 19/U Captain Keira Austin, teammates Claire O’Brien and Amy Parmenter, and Tournament MVP Toni Anderson were selected in a 22-athlete Australian 19/U Squad, while NSW 17/U Captain Kristen Kessler and teammates Demi Evans, Tayla Fraser, Veronika Jukic, Lauren Moore, Teigan O’Shannassy and Laura Towell were selected as part of the 36-athlete Australian 17/U Squad.

The athletes, selected following the six-day tournament, will attend national training camps at Netball Australia’s Centre of Excellence with many getting their first taste of a national program.

The 19/U National Squad, coached by Tania Obst and Australian Diamonds Assistant coach Michelle den Dekker, will travel to New Zealand and compete in the Trans-Tasman tournament at Rotorua in May, with the squad to be split into two teams.

“The opportunity for these athletes to gain international experience at such a young age is invaluable to their development and we hope this opportunity will help push for future Australian 21/U and Diamonds selections,” Obst said.

“We have the privilege of playing two Australian teams in New Zealand, which allows for more of our squad to gain this exposure.”

Obst said the selection panel, which also included Maria Lynch and Paula Stuart, were impressed with the standard and quality of netball played at the Championships.

“The squad we have chosen really impressed us throughout the Championships we think we have selected the best group of young 19/U netball talent in the nation, and are happy with the depth our squad will provide us,” Obst said.

Netball Australia National High Performance Pathway Manager and 17/U selector Stacey West said the selection panel, which also included Cathy Fellow and Lenore Blades, were spoilt for choice with the quality of netball the athletes played at the Championships.

This year’s 17/U National squad will regroup at Netball Australia’s Centre of Excellence at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in May for a training camp with all eight state and territory coaches, den Dekker and Australian Diamonds coach Lisa Alexander.

“The calibre of talent we had available for selection was very impressive and I am very happy with who we have selected,” West said.

“The opportunity for these young promising athletes to work with some of the country’s most experienced coaching and support staff at the Centre of Excellence will be very beneficial for their ongoing growth and development for the future.”

Congratulations to our 2015 Australian underage representatives.
