NSW gallant in SA loss

A second quarter blitz from South Australia has seen them take 35-19 victory over the NSW 19/U Team in Round 2 of the 2014 National Netball Championships in Melbourne.

SA settled into the match first, pulling away to a three goal lead early in the opening quarter.  However NSW weren’t to be discouraged and fought back to get within one goal at quarter time, trailing 5-6.

Head Coach Briony Akle made plenty of changes for the second quarter, looking to mix up and test new combinations.  SA seized on the opportunity to strike while NSW settled into its new line-up, and by halfway through the quarter had opened up a handy six goal lead.

SA defensive duo GK Lucy Armfield and GD Maddy Turner – a 2014 Australian 21U squad member – proved to be a formidable force as their combination refused to give NSW shooters any space.  With their circle defenders ably assisted by their midcourters, SA were able to extend their lead to 12 goals at half-time.

Again Akle made plenty of changes, keeping only one position the same as the second quarter – Billie Gurr at Goal Defence.  The changes seemed to lift the NSW side as they looked to work hard at chasing down the scoreboard deficit.

However as soon as NSW were able to string consecutive goals together, SA answered right back.  Although NSW’s best scoring quarter so far, SA won their third consecutive quarter to further extend their lead into the final 10 minutes, 27-12.

NSW were desperate as players threw themselves into every contest to try win back possession.  Although a greater second half performance, SA’s dominance in the second quarter saw them over the line to take honours by 16 goals.

NSW will do their best rest and recovery before getting back into the action tomorrow when they take on Tasmania at 9am AEST for Round 3. Stay tuned to Netball NSW social media channels for live score updates throughout the match;
