NSW open 19/U tournament with win

Update: Head Coach Jo Macdermid says the win is “doubly pleasing” for NSW 19/U Team…

The NSW 19/U Team has kicked off their 2013 campaign with a 20 goal win over Western Australia, 41-21, in the opening match of the National Netball Championships in Darwin.

After a few minutes of nerves the teams settled into the match, with NSW putting five up unanswered goals to take an early lead.  WA tried to move the ball quickly through the court to catch NSW out of position, but the defensive duo of GK Tahlia Goodwin and GD Billie Gurr combined well to limit the influence of the tall shooters.

Isabella Keogh at GS had her eye on goal with her long range shots, complimented by her tall shooting partner and vice-captain Claudia Russell under the post.  Tanisha Stanton at WA fed beautifully to the NSW circle with the shooters giving their side a five goal lead over WA at half time, 17-13.

NSW continued their defensive pressure into the second half, with the midcourt players putting hands over the ball to aid their circle defenders.  A couple of key intercepts from Goodwin in the second half gifted NSW possession, and the shooters made the most of the opportunities putting seven consecutive goals in the final quarter to post a 20 goal victory.

Head Coach Jo Macdermid says the team are relieved to have their first match under their belt.

“It’s just fabulous to get started; all those weeks of hard work we can finally put it out on court – to get a 20 goal win is doubly pleasing,” Macdermid said.

“I thought the efforts of Tahlia Goodwin in defence and also our vice-captain Claudia Russell in the shooting circle were standouts today … the entire team were able to stick to the game plan, and more pleasing for me as a coach, is that when they faltered they were quick to regather and refocus on the task at hand.”

NSW 19/U are back on court against South Australia this afternoon at 3.30pm (local time).  Stay tuned to facebook.com/OfficialNetballNSW for quarter score updates and photos.
