The 2016 NSW 17/U Development Squad got a taste of elite competition when they took on the ACT 17/U and 19/U Teams at the recent HeartKids Cup in Orange.
An annual tournament, where U20 Netball NSW Premier League team North Shore United also competed, provide the NSW squad with the opportunity to contest six matches across two days.
Introduced by Netball NSW in 2014, the 17/U Development Squad provides an opportunity for identified athletes who didn’t make the final twelve for this year’s NSW 17/U State Team to continue their development in a High Performance environment.
The 2016 NSW 17/U Development Squad has an identical training schedule as their 17/U State Team counterparts.
The Squad had an impressive outing at the tournament, eventually won by the ACT 19/U Team, notching four wins and two losses.
The wins came against Tuggeranong 38-9, Canberra 34-12, Baulkham Hills 33-12 and Orange 36-11.
The NSW team finished second in their pool behind the ACT 17/U Team, following a terrific contest in the pool play between the pair, ACT triumphant by just one goal, 29-28.
The second spot finish in their pool handed the Development Squad a Semi Finals berth against the ACT 19/U Team.
The NSW team put in a solid performance, taking the lead at halftime 16-13, and trailing by just one goal at the final break, 19-20, but the ACT team was too strong in the final quarter, outscoring the Development Squad 14-3, before going on to claim the Cup.
