The NSW 17/U and 19/U teams are in the leading packs at the 2019 National Netball Championships in Brisbane, with both sides set to play Finals on Monday.
The teams had 100 per cent records after two days of play, and while they both experienced losses at the weekend – the 17s to Victoria and the 19s to Queensland – they bounced back with further victories to remain well in contention for respective Grand Final berths.
After a narrow 34-31 defeat to Victoria on Saturday morning, Amber Cross’ 17/U troops bounced back with a resounding 51-11 win over Tasmania to put them back on track.
A 45-15 win over Northern Territory and a gritty 31-29 win over hosts Queensland on Sunday meant the 17s finished the round robin with six wins and one loss from their seven games.
That put them top of the ladder on goal percentage ahead of South Australia and Victoria, and ready for Semi Final action on Monday.
The NSW 19s, who are coached by Nerida Stewart, drew their first game on Saturday. It was a 34-34 thriller with the Victorians which ebbed and flowed from start to finish.
That was backed up with a stunning 52-28 victory over Tasmania before a Sunday morning showdown with the undefeated Queenslanders.
It turned out to be another rip-roaring affair as two of the best sides in the competition went head to head. Unfortunately it was the home side who just got the edge, 44-40, but NSW were still well placed for a Finals push.
The 19s’ final round robin game was against ACT and a good performance saw them win 37-24, booking third place on the ladder and a Finals place.
