The NSW State Teams have made a very impressive start to the 2019 National Netball Championships in Brisbane, with both sides recording 100 per cent records after two days of play.
The Nationals take place annually and are a chance for Australia’s best young talent to represent their respective state or territory. This year the Championships are being hosted by Netball Queensland at the newly opened QLD State Netball Centre.
Play got underway yesterday, Thursday 11 April, and will go right through until Tuesday, when the Grand Finals take place.
So far the NSW 17/U and 19/U teams have played three games each, with both sides winning all of their games, making it a perfect six from six for NSW.
The NSW 17s started their campaign with a superb 39-31 victory over the defending champions South Australia before an amazing first quarter showing against ACT (NSW won it 20-3) laid the foundations of a 51-27 win.
A good night’s rest would help keep NSW in good spirit for Friday’s play and they delivered a great performance to beat Western Australia 41-23.
The 19s opened their campaign with a good test against Western Australia. Leading 11-8 at the end of the first quarter, and 23-14 by halftime, they overcame a rocky third quarter to storm home in the fourth 40-27.
NSW had to use all of their nous to get past a plucky Northern Territory side in the 19s’ second game, but they negotiated a potential slip-up to claim a 37-31 win, before holding their nerve at the death on Friday morning to beat South Australia 27-25.
Both NSW teams will play twice on Saturday with the 17s taking on Victoria and Tasmania, while the 19s will do battle with also meet the Victorians and Tassie.
