Queensland has held on to defeat NSW by eight goals in a hard-fought Round Six match at the 19/U National Netball Championships in Darwin. QLD led at every interchange, and despite a resurgence from NSW in the middle quarters, held out to finish 32-24
It was tough from the first centre pass, with QLD turning over NSW first centre pass to get up early. QLD went on to score the next five before NSW could feature on the scoreboard, with GA Isabella Keogh nailing a long-shot. The teams traded goals with WA holding onto their lead at the first break.
NSW heeded their coaches quarter-time tips as they flew out for the second quarter. The midcourt used their speed to break down the QLD defensive zone, with vice-captain Claudia Russell standing strong for her side at GS slotting five goals from eight attempts. The hard work paid off for NSW as the teams went into the half-time break with QLD leading by just four goals, 16-12.
Despite opening the score for the second half NSW couldn’t get on-top of QLD as the teams traded goals for the full 10 minutes of the third quarter. Possession was treasured as the benches became louder and louder, yelling encouragement to their on-court players.
An injury timeout called early in the fourth quarter disrupted NSW flow, and QLD made them pay putting on seven goals to NSW one during a six minute passage on play. NSW were able to finish strongly, scoring the final three consecutive goals, but the margin was too large to chase down with QLD finishing eight goals clear.
NSW 17/U is up next for their match against QLD at 8.00pm (local time). The 19/U State Team are back on court tomorrow (Thursday 11 April) at 2.00pm to take on Tasmania. Stay tuned to facebook.com/OfficialNetballNSW for quarter score updates and photos.
