Simpson: We’re in a really good position heading into Nationals

The NSW 21/U Team is in their final preparations before departing for Adelaide to contest the 2014 National Netball Championships next week.

Featuring some of Australia’s best up-and-coming netball talent, the 21/U tournament will be contested from Tuesday 11 to Sunday 16 March at Netball SA Stadium, with NSW taking on Australian Capital Territory first up.

NetballNSWTV caught up with NSW Head Coach Megan Simpson to see how the team is feeling in their final days of preparations.

“They’ve been travelling really well.  We’re in our last week of training … and we’ve only got a couple of sessions left until we fly out, and I’ve been really happy with how they’ve progressed and they’ve come together as a group,” Simpson said.

Practice matches have played an important part in the State Team’s preparations, with the side taking part in the Netball NSW Invitational Pre-Season Tournament.  Taking the court against DOOLEYS State League Waratah Cup sides, Simpson was able to witness her combinations in action during real-time play.

“The Pre-Season competition … [has] been a really good platform for us to test the different combinations and its given them a lot more exposure in match play scenarios, so I think that’s really put us in a good position leading into Nationals,” Simpson said.

Along with ACT, NSW will take the court against Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia and 2013 Champions and hosts South Australia throughout the round-robin tournament, looking to cement their spot in the top four to contest the Finals over the weekend.

With the Northern Territory and Tasmania missing in action from the 2014 competition, Simpson said having fewer teams to contend with doesn’t mean her side can have any lapse in concentration.

“I think if anything it makes us have to focus more intensely on all of the games because there is no opportunity to really have a bad day I guess,” Simpson said.

“All of the teams that are competing are obviously very strong and they’re all highly experienced. It’s about us preparing for every single game and treating the opposition in the same way as we would for any other game.”
