Waratahs fall to Tassie Magpies

The Netball NSW Waratahs have gone down 53-47 in their first Round 6 Australian Netball League game of the weekend against competition newcomers the Tasmanian Magpies.

The Waratahs got off to a good start with Goal Attack Mikaela Vaughan scoring in the first after 13 seconds but by the end of the first quarter the scoreboard was level at 13-13.

During the second quarter neither team gave an inch. The Waratahs made an early change with Lili Gorman-Brown at Centre and Nicole Styles moving to Goal Defence. The Tasmanian Magpies, not to be deterred, continued to attack resulting in a five-goal lead at half-time.

The third quarter was a hard fought contest with the Waratahs steadily reducing the gap throughout the period to trail by only four goals at three-quarter time.

Going into the fourth and final quarter Waratahs GS Allison Miller came on the court and provided fresh energy for the team but with consistent court work from the Magpies their lead extended and by full time the winning margin was six points.

Waratahs Captain Sophie Halpin said they had some really great passages of play, however, struggled to convert them to goals.

“I thought we were good and had really good moments, unfortunately, the scoreboard didn’t reflect that,” she said.

“The new players on court provided fresh momentum for the team, unfortunately, we couldn’t capitalise on that.”

Waratahs Coach Briony Akle said there were occasions where her team were in the lead but were unable to maintain it when they needed to.

“We stayed with them the whole time and, on occasions, we were up. We did some really good things and hopefully, when we play tomorrow, we can fix that.

“When we stuck to the game plan, we were really effective. And when we didn’t, we were not.”

The Waratahs take on the Magpies again tomorrow at 3.30pm, at Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre after the Suncorp Super Netball clash between the NSW Swifts and Collingwood Magpies.
