The NSW 17/U and 19/U State teams have both registered a win and loss apiece in their opening games of the 2018 National Netball Championships in Adelaide.
The 17/U team got their campaign underway with a tough match-up against the Victorians this morning, and despite matching their opponents at times, in the end the southerners proved too strong.
Victoria took an early lead and refused to let NSW back in front, with crucial turnovers proving costly. Victoria started the second quarter forcefully, scoring the first six goals unanswered.
Clean shooting by Sophie Dwyer kept NSW’s hopes alive but strong defensive pressure from the Victorians saw NSW struggle to work the ball into their goal third.
They did show glimpses going forward in the final term but the Victorians proved too strong in the end, running out 37-26 winners.
However, it was one-way traffic for NSW in their second game of the day against Tasmania as they racked up the goals to register a 51-15 win and put them in a good place ahead of their clashes with Western Australia and ACT tomorrow.
The NSW 19/U team had similar success against Tasmania in their opening game of the Nationals, winning 40-18 to set themselves up for a massive clash with the Victorians.
And what a game that turned out to be as both sides gave it everything to try and finish the opening day with a 100 per cent record. Alas for NSW, their efforts came up just short with the Victorians pipping them by one goal (22-21) but they showed they can more than match it with their neighbouring rivals.
Like the 17s, the 19s will face both ACT and Western Australia on day two of the Nationals.
