Following on from the Umpires B Camp on 22-23 February, over the weekend it was the C Badged umpires turn!
Twenty-nine umpires attended the camp at the Anne Clark Centre to be put through their paces on Saturday with real-time umpiring with coaching and assessment, before Sunday’s technical and information sessions.
On Saturday, Division Six and Seven DOOLEYS State League sides as well as the Sydney Netball Academy squad were utilised for the practical session with the teams playing games of two 15 minutes quarters.
“It provided quality games… for each round to enable the Umpires Committee and National A Badges coaching the umpires to test, and it’s the first time ever at a camp that we were able to test umpires and we successfully tested two C-Badged to National ‘B’ Badges,” said Netball NSW Umpire and Officials Development Coordinator Jan Simpson.
Simpson was happy to test and award B Badge accreditation to Mikala Smith (Hills District) and Lucy Alexander (Gosford), two umpires who pleasantly surprised the presenters and coaches.
“The coaches, all of whom were A Badge umpires, and the members of the Umpires Committee, noticed in the first two rounds that the two girls were definitely above and beyond a National C Badge… It was quite exciting to have the opportunity to test these two young ladies, that were very qualified, to a B Badge.”
Following the excitement of Saturday, it was down to business on Sunday with technical and information sessions.
“We educated them to follow the KPI of the National Umpires Development Framework, to make sure they tick all boxes to become a stronger National C, and then the next badge will follow… assuring that there will be support for their journey and their goals as well as emphasising that technique and skill is the most important part of umpiring at any badge level.”
