Central West umpires driven to succeed

Netball is a wonderful sport, not only it is a great social and inclusive activity but it allows people to set themselves goals and achieve the unexpected.

Last Thursday, 2 May, one such dream came true for Parkes’ umpire Calli Miller, when she officiated her first DOOLEYS State League Division Four game.

Speaking ahead of her match between Sutherland and Central Coast on Court D at the Anne Clark Centre, Calli took a moment to digest her debut.

“I’m nervous and very excited,” said Calli. “I didn’t think I’d be considered for this, so it’s very exciting.”

Calli and fellow West/Central West umpire Leisa Kenny from Forbes, travel up to four and half hours each way to umpire in the DOOLEYS State League, but are thrilled by their accomplishment.

“I did State League Division Eight last year, and then this year after B Camp someone in their wisdom decided to put me on Division Four,” explained a coy Calli Miller.

On speaking about Calli and Leisa’s appointments to DOOLEYS State League Division Four, Netball NSW Umpire and Officials Development Coordinator Jan Simpson explained how both deserved this acknowledgement based upon their regional performances.

“Leisa and Callihave worked really hard … because we pick them up for their Regional State League and then we bought them into State League Five to Eight. They went from Eight to Five, and now they are doing State League Four,” explained Jan.

Jan is particularly pleased, as growing the umpiring ranks in this area of NSW has been an ongoing project for several years.

“The calibre of umpiring in this region is very very good. Back in 2005 we started our umpiring program from scratch in West/Central West and now there is a very strong pathway.”

“The region now has a huge number of National Bs and hopefully if these girls (Calli and Leisa) continue, they will be future National As,” concluded Jan.

Netball NSW runs a number of National Umpires Accreditation Courses. There are various levels of accreditation, each level covering theory and practical components. Further details can be found by clicking here or contacting Jan Simpson on 02 9951 5000 during business hours.
