Update 26/10/2015: Registrations are now closed.
New South Wales has already seen an impressive 536 umpires awarded with their National C Badges so far in 2015, and every one of them is invited to the annual Netball NSW Rookies Camp.
The Rookies Camp is open to all umpires who received their National C Badge accreditation during the 2015 season, giving them a chance to mix and mingle with colleagues whilst also getting practical coaching from some of the best in the business.
This year’s camp is being held simultaneously with the 2016 NSW 17/U Phase I trials on Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November at Netball Central, with registrations open until 5pm AEST Friday 23 October.
Netball NSW had previously advised of a different approach to State Team trials for 2016, with athletes taken through training sessions and match play to provide selectors with a more holistic view of their skills and talents.
“The change in format provided the Sports Development department an opportunity to then align our Rookies Camp with NSW 17/U trials; we’re able to provide practical simulated play for both umpires and players at a similar stage in their pathways,” Netball NSW Volunteer Workforce Manager Dianne Brown said.
“Previously we’ve invited Association’s 15/U Representative Teams to participate in a friendly round robin tournament. This year by utilising the 17/U Phase I trials we are giving our participants the opportunity to practice their skills with athletes on a similar level in their development, as well as providing the personnel needed to oversee matches. It’s a win/win.”
It won’t just be match play throughout the two-day camp, with participants also taking part in theoretical workshops as presented by National A/AA Badged umpires who will also be on-hand to offer real-time mentoring.
Topics will include protocols and procedures, umpire pathways and the opportunities they hold, as well as Game Sense Introduction by utilising the new online Umpire Community Toolkit.
“The Rookies Camp really covers everything you need to know about being an umpire – the how, the why, the tools available to assist in your development, as well as putting you in touch with experienced and knowledgeable individuals who have been through that pathway,” Brown stated.
“Also if any of our previous camps are anything to go by, they’re always a lot of fun where individuals make new friends by getting to know each other better.
“With more than 500 C-badged umpires already we’re expecting a large number to attend, so if you’re interested register now through netballnsw.com or contact us in the office for more information,” Brown concluded.
