Sixty teams are prepped and ready to compete in the freshly named DOOLEYS Metro League, a competition that has been an integral part of the Netball NSW landscape since 1984.
Played on the floorboards of the state’s premier netball facility – Netball Central at Sydney Olympic Park, Netball NSW will proudly host over 600 of New South Wales’ finest metropolitan-based elite netballers every week for 18 weeks of regular competition, plus finals.
The 60 teams will be divided into six divisions of 10 teams to provide a weekly competition environment for Association pathway athletes. The competition is held across three evenings each week; Monday (Divisions 3 & 4) Tuesday (5 & 6) and Thursday (1 & 2).
The teams will battle it – in the hope to reach the ultimate 60 minute battle of the year…the Grand Final Day on Sunday 4 September 2016.
For former Australian Diamond, and current Head Coach of Hills District Division 2 Metro League team, Catherine Cox knows all too well the importance of having training and weekly playing environments and the benefits.
“Turning up to training to catch up with the girls, and then of course the playing of matches was and still is, one of the most enjoyable parts of my week,” says Cox.
“Netball is about being part of a family and teams like these are really special…we (at Hills) are so pumped to start playing next week and we are really looking forward to getting the season under way.”
“Week-in and week-out competition plus training with a team has been a huge part of my life. Some of my best friends are thanks to competitions and teams like Metro League, where you develop as people, learn about team culture and too be honest…just enjoy being together”.
Catherine’s side will take the court each Thursday in Division 2 and she can’t wait to see the 2016 season unfold.
“For me personally being able to give back to my own Association at Hills District is great. They have been incredibly supportive throughout my whole career and now being physically able to contribute to the Metro League program at Hills, work with fellow coaches, and individual players is really rewarding for me.”
