Charlestown gets double dose of netball with Koori Tournament

Whilst Charlestown Netball Association will still be recovering from the netball bonanza of hosting the 2015 Netball NSW Masters over the weekend, they don’t have much time to rest as the Association prepares to host the 2015 Koori Netball Tournament.

The 2015 Koori Netball Tournament gets underway this Friday 23 October, concluding on Saturday 24th, and is aimed at increasing participation of Aboriginal women in sport and recreation in a fun, competitive environment.

Fifty-seven teams will be participating this year, with the tournament celebrating its 16th year in 2015. Charlestown has been a long-time supporter of the Koori Netball Tournament having hosted the competition every year, but their support doesn’t stop there; volunteers get stuck into everything, whether it be assisting with the draw, overseeing facilities, or manning the all-important barbecue.

The annual tournament is presented by the NSW Government Office of Sport and Recreation, and in 2015 is being supported by Netball NSW in helping to run the competition as well as coordinating umpires.

“Netball NSW is excited to get back to Charlestown Netball Association for the second week running, and to see the participants in action at the 2015 Koori Netball Tournament,” Community Engagement Manager Amy Quirk said.

“Whilst the tournament has been running for 16 years, 2015 is the first time Netball NSW has been working in conjunction with the Office of Sport & Recreation, and we’re thrilled to be a part of it.  In addition to allocating accredited umpires, we will also assist Charlestown with some extra personnel to help with the day-to-day running.

“We’re particularly excited to see the players in action and will provide assistance in identifying talented athletes who could go on to representative honours, providing support in accessing future Association, Academy and NSW selection opportunities.

“Netball NSW is proud to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to participate in all levels of the game, and wish everyone involved with the 2015 Koori Netball Tournament all the very best,” Quirk concluded.
