The Australian Diamonds finish 2014 undefeated after accounting for England 54-47 tonight, Wednesday 22 October, in Canberra.
In what was the Australian team’s 400th International, the reigning Commonwealth Games Gold Medallists and World Champions were too strong for the visitors, who showed some glimpses of brilliance but could not match it with the Diamonds for the full 60 mintes.
England made a stronger start than in the opening Test in Bendigo but could not run with the Australians to the end of the first quarter.
After Australia stretched out their lead in the final minutes of the first quarter to hold a 16-9 lead Anna Mayes switched up her attack end with Jade Clarke moving from WA to C and Kadeen Corbin coming on at WA for the second quarter.
A couple of slick plays into goal for England brought them within seven but Australia dominated across the court to lead by eight at halftime, 31-23.
QLD Firebirds defender Clare McMeniman made her Australian debut when she replaced Julie Corletto at GD at halftime but England came out fired up in the third quarter and with Eboni Beckford-Chambers entering the fray, they started to make inroads into the margin, just as they had in the first Test.
Caitlin Thwaites was injected into the contest when Caitlin Bassett left the court at an injury timeout and it took a little time for the new frontline to resettle, establishing a seven-goal margin once again with four and a half minutes remaining in the term and led 41-36 at the end of the third quarter.
Kimberlee Green entered the court at C for the final quarter, and the Diamonds carried on where they had left off, moving the ball too easily down the court to finish winners by seven goals.
