A young Liz Ellis was in the crowd when Australia defeated New Zealand to win the World Championship in Sydney in 1991, fittingly, the NSW netball legend has been named as an Ambassador of Netball World Cup 2015.
2015 will be the first time the event (formerly, World Netball Championship) returns to Sydney since 1991.
“It’s really exciting and it’s sort of a, I guess, a loop for me… my aspirations to play for Australia started watching the 1991 World Cup when Australia beat New Zealand by a goal and now… 23 years later, here I am being announced as an Ambassador for next year’s Netball World Cup,” Ellis said.
The Netball NSW Hall of Famer said there is nothing like cheering on the green & gold in a World Cup on home soil.
“It was so exciting and we were just beside ourselves because the game was so close and my overriding memory is seeing Rosalee Jencke come out and take that final intercept, and I thought – she is just a star! It was unbelievable… Just to be a part of that crowd was so electrifying.”
