Illawarra volunteers raise their hands

We are just days away from the 47th instalment of the Netball NSW State Championships, and the host Association’s President has just one thing to say… they’re ready.

Illawarra & District Netball Association will host 131 teams representing 74 Associations from around the State, who will contest over 1,200 games from Saturday 6 to Monday 8 June.

Whilst the competition is owned and run by Netball NSW, our State Championships cannot happen without the hard work and support from the host Association.  We caught up with Illawarra President Dianne Elvy ahead of this weekend, who said preparations for the big event started long ago.

“We have a committee of about 10 people who have all been involved in the preparations for this weekend’s State Championships,” Elvy said.

“Preparations started back in January, and there have been lots and lots and lots of hours spent on phone calls and emails to organise the weekend. Fingers crossed everything is going well.”

Along with the Illawarra Executive Committee, Dianne estimates about 100 volunteers per day will assist the running of State Championships this weekend – whether they are manning the BBQ or canteen, helping with rubbish collections, or doing ad hoc jobs.

After co-hosting the 2014 State Age Championships, Dianne said a lot of people who assisted last year put up their hand to volunteer for the 2015 State Championships after learning Illawarra would host.

“We’ve had heaps of people come to us and ask how they can help after hearing we’re hosting ‘State Champs’, which has been great because they’ve done it before and so know how things run.  Many of the volunteers are senior players who just love their netball, plus parents of some of our juniors who want to help out,” Dianne stated.

And while preparations are going well, and Dianne admits she’s “hoping for the good weather to continue”, the long-time President is most excited about welcoming visitors from all over New South Wales to the Illawarra region.

“I hope everyone enjoys themselves this weekend and appreciates the Illawarra area.  It’s wonderful to have so many visitors help the local economy – hopefully people will return on their holidays,” Dianne said.

“I am also looking forward to catching up with old friends as well as seeing some great netball on display.”

Held annually across the June Long Weekend, the 2015 State Championships will be contested into nine age-divisions: Open Championships and Open Division Two; 21 & Under Championship; 17 & Under Championship, Division Two and Division 3; and Masters Division – Over 35, Over 40 and Over 45.

The title of State Champions isn’t the only honour up for grabs when the competition wraps up at Illawarra.  Introduced in 2009, the Pat Weston OAM Country Champions Cup is named in honour of Netball NSW and Parramatta Auburn Life Member Pat Weston OAM and awarded to the highest placed regional Association (outside Sydney Metro) in the Open Championship Division.
