Inner Western Suburbs have overcome a spirited Hawkesbury City, 48-41, to be crowned the 2016 DOOLEYS Metro League Division 6 Champions following an exciting 60-minute display.
The Minor Premiers were able to secure the double thanks to displaying a maturity far beyond their young years, with a final score which didn’t properly reflect the tough contest that was played out on court.
Inner West’s defensive pressure was dominant early with their efforts dutifully rewarded by the attacking end – particularly from Goal Shooter Amy Lincoln, who would go on to shoulder the majority of her team’s scoring load with 38 goals at 76 percent accuracy. However Hawkesbury showed they were equally up to the challenge as they turned around an early five-goal deficit to get back within a couple of goals.
But their purple patch was short-lived as Inner West put their foot down to finish the opening 15 minutes; proving clinical in defence to get back out to a four-goal lead at the first break.
Despite momentum turning against them, Hawkesbury came out firing at the start of the second quarter; their circle defenders turning over critical possession to give their shooters opportunity to capitalise. They would get as close as three goals before Inner West flexed their muscles once more.
While it was a better defensive quarter from Hawkesbury, they were still outscored 11 goals to 13 by the opposition and Inner West extended their lead to six goals at half-time.
Four consecutive turnovers to Hawkesbury gave the side the perfect start to the second half, effectively dismissing any ill-harboured feelings from the opening 30 minutes. Through quick ball movement they soon found themselves back within a few goals of Inner West, sending Show Court spectators into raptures.
But credit Inner West who didn’t allow themselves to be distracted, maintaining their patient style to provide strong service to their shooters. However the quarter belonged to Hawkesbury who won it by three goals to take some much-needed momentum into final 15 minutes.
Capitalising on their run of play, Hawkesbury opened the fourth quarter with the first goal to get within two but Inner West had a quick response to set up an exciting see-sawing match up. The intensity rose as the clocked wound down, with both teams leaving everything on the court to will themselves to victory.
With tensions high the young Inner West outfit was able to weather the Hawkesbury storm, winning their third quarter to emerge seven-goal victors.
