Introducing 21/U NSW Captains – Alix and Sophie

Alix McDermott and Sophie Halpin will lead the NSW 21/U Team as Captain and Vice Captain, in the upcoming National Championships.

The duo will lead the squad as they take on the best future netball talent from around the country at the 2013 21/U National Netball Championships in Canberra from Tuesday 12 to Sunday 17 March

The two players head into the Championships following on-court tussles with some of the best in the game after taking the court in the Australian Netball League; Halpin with the Netball NSW Blues in 2012, while McDermott ran out with the NNSW Blues in 2010 and, more recently, with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in 2012.

Both players have plenty of experience on the National stage.  McDermott, aged 20, was a member of the Australian Team at the 21/U International Netball Series in Ballarat last year, while also spending two years with the AIS, winning back-to-back National titles with NSW 21/U Team in 2010 and 2011.

Halpin, 19, who was named Vice Captain of the NSW 19/U Team in 2012, also has Australian experience following selection in the 19/U squad who were valued training partners for the international 21/U teams for the Ballarat tournament.

Upon announcing the leadership group, NSW 21/U Head Coach Maria Lynch says she has the upmost confidence in her two leaders.

“To lead a NSW State Team is a huge honour. Both Alix and Sophie have been through the NSW pathways and bring experience and energy to our team,” Lynch said.

“Throughout our preparation these girls have put their hands up and consistently setting the bar high. They are always happy to share their insights and will help guide the rest of the girls through the tough week of Nationals.”

“Alix and Sophie are really excited to have this opportunity and will do an amazing job,” concluded Lynch.

The NSW 21/U Team start their 21/U Championshipscampaign against hosts the ACT at Lyneham Netball Courts on Tuesday 12 March at 10:30am.
