It’s all in a Saturday

New shoes have been bought, whistles are cleaned and Saturday netball is about to begin! For many of the the 118 Netball NSW affiliated Associations across New South Wales this weekend will mark the start of their 2016 Winter netball season and the excitement is palpable.

For Manly Netball Association, one of the largest in Sydney with over 5,400 members, the preparations are well underway.

For Jane Hauser, President of Manly Netball Association, the preparations are many and wide-ranging. From the Umpiring Committee to the Executive Committee, to the volunteers courtside and an the canteen, a lot of work and dedication goes into launching the 2016 season, explains Jane.

“There are fifty to sixty volunteers from the clubs on any given Saturday. If you include the coaches, managers and primary carers, we have over 500 volunteers each Saturday,” Jane says.

“The Umpiring Committee are working out the umpiring allocation for the Clubs and the Executive Committee are on duty looking after timing and giving out game folders to make sure everything runs smoothly.”

Ninety-six netball posts have been brought out of storage and erected on 48 courts. Between 50 and 60 volunteers have put up their hands to help in the canteen, to offer direction to new players, mums and dads or with NetSetGO. More than 500 coaches, managers and primary carers have been getting their teams ready for the first day of competition!

The canteen committee has ordered the water, hydration drinks, fruit, pies, finger buns and muffins. Many a sandwich will be made ready for hungry players and supporters! Over 100 loaves of bread and 60 kilos of sausages have been ordered for the sausage sizzle. Three coffee vans are ready to support the Association and supply much-needed caffeine for the parents and supporters on a cold winter’s morning.

Two physiotherapists and a strapper are ready to rock and roll from the break of dawn.

There is lot of preparation going into the start of a new season and this is replicated across hundreds of Associations across the state and country.

With 118 Associations, over 850 Clubs and around 115,000 netballers about to embark on their 2016 season Netball NSW wishes everyone an enjoyable, safe and fun start to their seasons.
