Our favourite sport was a big winner at the Women’s Health Magazine ‘I Support Women in Sport’ Awards, held at Establishment Bar last night, Monday 13 October.
The Australian Diamonds were named the A-Team of the Year after breaking a 12-year drought to claim Commonwealth Games Gold in Glasgow earlier this year, with Captain Laura Geitz also announced as the Leadership Legend.
NSW junior and Australian netball legend Cath Cox was also recognised with the Service to the Sport Award following her retirement announcement earlier this year, ending almost two decades contesting elite netball at both domestic and international levels.
The award caps off a dream end to Cox’s 18-year career with her final match earning her an ANZ Championship Premiers medal after the Melbourne Vixens claimed victory in the 2014 Grand Final.
Women’s Health editor Felicity Harley told the magazine’s website, “This night is all about giving recognition and telling the stories of Australian sports women, to who don’t get enough coverage for their efforts and talents.”
“The Women’s Health ‘I Support Women in Sport’ awards was created as a platform to bring together and champion the successes of our country’s female sporting greats, and the night is all about telling their stories,” Harley concluded.
Netball NSW would like to congratulate Cath, Laura and the Australian Diamonds on their accolades, as well as all the 2014 ‘I Support Women in Sport’ award recipients.
