NSW claim nail-biter over WA

NSW 21/U team has posted a thrilling three goal victory over Western Australian in their Round Two match of the 21/U National Netball Championships in Canberra, after the two sides were drawn at three quarter time.

Read all the action from NSW Round One win over ACT earlier in the day.

It was a physical match from the first whistle with both teams trying to gain the upper hand with momentum.  Captain Alix McDermott opened the score for NSW, with the side taking a small four goal lead over WA halfway through the quarter.

Defensive duo GK Karli Ireland and GD Kristiana Manu’a combined well down back to double play over WA’s shots.  GS Kristina Brice led from the front with a perfect nine shots from as many attempts to give NSW a five goal lead at the first break, 15-10.

WA responded early for the start of the second to claw the deficit back to three goals.  The teams chased down any loose ball to gift their shooters as much possession as possible as they traded goals.

Some accurate shooting from the shooters saw NSW extend their lead to seven goals at halftime, 30-23.

A resurgent WA flew out of the starting blocks for the second half, with their midcourt putting pinpoint passes into their tall timber shooters.  The surge of possession saw WA even the score with just under two minutes left for the quarter.

The final nail-biting minutes saw the two goal shooters trade goals, with WA Kaylia Stanton slotting an equaliser in the final seconds to see the scoreboard at 40 goals a-piece to set up a thrilling final quarter.

For the final quarter Head Coach Maria Lynch made her first and only changes for the match, moving Manu’a to GK and bringing Gemma Ferrington onto GD and Donnay van Taak to C.

The thrilling quarter had fans on their feet cheering the two sides as they went head-to-head.  Nsw opened the score and were able to push out to a four goal lead before WA responded to bring it back to two.  Every ball was hard fought and the pressure intensified as the clock counted down.

In the end NSW were able to hold onto the lead to claim a three goal victory over WA, 54-51.

Captain Alix McDermott had nothing but praise for a gutsy performance from her NSW teammates.

“Tonight’s match against WA demonstrated how strong NSW can be as a team … we need to make sure we continue to build on tonight’s performance,” McDermott said.

“It’s really important looking ahead that we take into place for tomorrow’s match against South Australia – and for the entire tournament – what we have put in place tonight.”
