NSW ready for 2014 Marie Little OAM Shield

The 2014 Netball NSW Marie Little OAM Shield Team will travel to Victoria this weekend to contest the 2014 Marie Little OAM Shield at Waverley Netball Centre.

The NSW team will take on South Australia and reigning Champions Victoria at the premier tournament in Australia for netballers with an intellectual disability.

The event will be played alongside Week 7 matches of the 2014 Australian Netball League on Sunday 17 August.

Seven players return from the NSW team that finished third at the 2013 tournament including Co-Captains Sarah Jayne Forrest and Melissa Gallagher, joined by new faces Caroline Day and Karina Baines.

The 2013 coaching staff is also back at the helm, led by Head Coach Jenny O’Keeffe with Assistant Coach Annie Collins and Manager Ellen Monaghan.

With the event fast approaching, the team has been building in training over recent weeks.

“Preparations have been going pretty well, but it’s been a little disruptive; Sunday was the first time we’ve had everyone together but everyone’s happy, enthusiastic and ready to go!” O’Keeffe said.

The NSW team contested an All Abilities Carnival hosted by Netball NSW and Blue Mountains Netball Association on July 20, playing six matches over the day and coming out on top!

“That was a terrific opportunity for the players to have a hit-out together,” O’Keeffe said.

“They won the carnival, played really well so it was good for particularly Caroline, who hadn’t played with the girls before, and for a few of them who don’t play regularly.

“It was also good for the team to familiarise themselves with the routines of playing a day-long event, the same format that they’ll play in Melbourne.”

Netball NSW Community Engagement Manager Kristy Guthrie is happy the event provides players with an intellectual disability with the opportunity to play against other states.

“The NSW team’s skills have been improving remarkably each week and they are very excited to be heading to Melbourne to take on the Victorian and South Australian teams,” Guthrie said.

“Netball NSW is committed to providing equal opportunities to players of all abilities and we are right behind the team and wishing them all the best for the weekend!”

The NSW team kick off their event against Victoria at 10:00am this Sunday 17 August.
