When 75 Associations gathered together for three-days of back-to-back netball at the 2013 Netball NSW State Championships, the title of State Champions wasn’t the only trophy that was up for grabs.
Introduced in 2009, the Pat Weston OAM Country Championships Cup is presented to the highest ranked regional Association to contest the Open Championships division.
This year, there were eight regional Associations vying for the title in the Open Championship division, with the trophy presented to Orange Netball Association.
It is the first time that Orange has been awarded the trophy, following their Open Championship team’s third place finish with 16 wins and five losses after playing against some of the best netballers from around New South Wales.
NetballNSWTV caught up with one of their player’s Mardi Alpin after the presentation, who said it was a huge honour to win the prestigious trophy.
“It’s fantastic, we’re really, really pleased to have [won this trophy]. The weekend was absolutely fantastic, we had an absolute ball. We only lost a few games, so for a country team we’re really please with where we’ve [finished on the ladder],” Alpin said.
The Pat Weston OAM Country Champions Cup was named in honour of Netball NSW Life Member Pat Weston OAM, who worked tirelessly in the regional netball community including many years as Tamworth Netball Association President.
Congratulations to Orange Netball Association on being crowned the 2013 Pat Weston OAM Country Championships Cup winners!
