With the countdown to the netball season well and truly underway, the Anne Clark Centre hosted a special pre-season event in the lead up to the 2013 DOOLEYS State League.
The 2013 Netball NSW Invitational Pre-Season competition was held for local netball teams to dust off the netball cobwebs and get back onto the court!
Played over three weeks commencing on Wednesday 13 February, the invitational competition incorporated elements of the FastNet and Fast5 formats of the game, that have emerged on the constantly developing netball landscape.
With six-minute quarters, Power Plays and one, two and three-point goal-shooting areas, it was a fun way for the teams to have a run on court before the season proper.
Baulkham Hills, Eastwood Ryde, Illawarra, NSWIS, Penrith, St George and Sutherland Shire took part in the ‘friendly’ round-robin event.
Gail Eckert, Netball NSW General Manager Operations & Events, said the teams involved embraced the concept.
“The Invitational was great to get a feel for a new product. Overall the feedback has been great and everyone had a lot of fun with it,” Eckert said.
It was also a fun and challenging experience for the umpires!
“It was a fantastic opportunity for a pre-season run for our A Badges to get their head back into the game ahead of DOOLEYS State League,” said Jan Simpson, Netball NSW Umpires and Officials Development Coordinator.
“The main thing that stood out to me was the fantastic communication between the umpires, coaches and players – everybody was out of their comfort zone with the new rules so everyone was talking, checking rules and working it through together.
“The Bench Officials Panel also used the three weeks as an educational workshop to upskill some of the Bench Officials coming through the pathway.”
