NSW were first on the board, with a goal under the post from GS Kristina Brice. Some early misses from the SA shooters saw NSW open a slim three goal lead; however SA worked hard through the court to chase down the goal deficit. NSW went into the first break one goal up, 11-10.
The momentum stayed with SA with the side taking the lead for the first time halfway through the second quarter. Some aerial acrobatics from GK Karli Ireland gave NSW shooters extra scoring opportunities, with Brice scoring on the buzzer to give NSW a two goal lead at half time, 25-23.
SA made the first changes for the match, bringing Gia Abernathy to C while moving Maddy Proud to WA. NSW scored first, however SA were quick to respond and were able to even the scoreboard after five minutes of play in the second half.
It was goal for goal throughout the quarter, with the lead exchanging hands multiple times. NSW defensive duo GK Ireland and GD Kristiana Manu’a worked overtime to limit the influence of SA shooters Cody Lange and Chelsea Lemke, but SA were able to hang onto the lead for the final break, 35-33.
Head Coach Maria Lynch made her single team change for the start of the fourth quarter, bringing Emilee Lang onto WA. Again the two sides exchanged the lead, as the ball bounced back and forth from the two scoring ends.
However the experienced SA side for an extra gear in the last six minutes of play, with GS Lange scoring 11 goals from as many attempts to see SA take out a five goal win over NSW, 50-45.
Head Coach Maria Lynch says the team are disappointed after their loss, but will pick up and turn their attention to WA for tomorrow.
“It’s disappointed at the moment as we as we are caught up on the loss … but when you think about what these girls have done this week, I couldn’t be prouder,’ said Lynch.
“[NSW] left nothing in the tank out there and they just kept fighting right until the end.”
“We have grown as a team (since out Round Two win) so will look to notch up our game plan against WA … we want to make sure we finish strongly in this tournament,” Lynch concluded.
