Netball NSW is pleased to confirm the appointments of NSW State Team Officials for the 2017 National Netball Championships, to be held in Canberra, ACT, from 19-24 April, 2017.
For the NSW 17/U Team, long-time coach Lenore Blades returns to the State Team fold as Head Coach – bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience having both played and coached at Nationals level.
Both Colleen Mitchell and Nikki Welsford return as Assistant Coach and Team Manager, respectively, for the second consecutive year and will be joined by Apprentice Coach Kirstie Fuller, who was previously Assistant Coach of the 2016 NSW 17/U Development Squad.
After acting as Assistant Coach for the Championship-winning 2016 NSW 21/U Team, Pate Cooper has been appointed to her first NSW Head Coach role of the 19/U State Team in 2017. It is Cooper’s first Head Coach appointment after also serving as co-Assistant Coach of the NSW 17/U Development Squad for two seasons (2014-15).
Joining Cooper will be Nardia Macdonald in her first State Team appointment as NSW 19/U Assistant Coach. The long-time player (more than two decades at Netball NSW’s top level), Macdonald was awarded her Advanced Coaching Accreditation in April this year and has been coaching (and playing!) in the 2016 SAMSUNG Premier League for North Shore United.
Rounding out the appointments is NSW 19/U Team Manager Maureen Stephenson OAM. No stranger to the State Teams environment, ‘Stevo’ will head to her 13th Nationals campaign since first being appointed in 2005.
The recipient of the Netball NSW Waratah Service Award in April this year, Stevo is also a National AA Badged Umpire and has also enjoyed a long career an umpire, mentor and allocator at all levels of the sport.
“We’re very excited by the calibre of our 2017 State Team Officials who will help guide our athletes at the 2017 National Netball Championships,” Anna Longman, General Manager – High Performance, said.
“This year’s appointments provide a great mix of both experience and new opportunities. We’re excited to see the likes of Lenore return to the fold – someone who has such a proud history of playing and coaching for the Waratah.
“On the other hand, individuals such as Pate, Kirstie and Nardia have been given new opportunities to continue the legacy of those before them, whilst also bringing new ideas to the State Team environment.
“It’s incredibly exciting for NSW, and I know that our 17/U and 19/U athletes are in great hands with this group. We’re excited to see their journey to next year’s Nationals in Canberra.
“On behalf of everyone at Netball NSW I would like to congratulate the women on their appointments, and wish them all the best for their 2017 Nationals campaign,” Longman concluded.
Both 17/U and 19/U State Team Phase 1 trials will commence on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 October, respectively. For more information on the 2017 NSW State Teams, please contact the Netball NSW High Performance Team on (02) 9951 5000 during business hours or email email@example.com.
